Hailing from Germany, Schnauzers are actually broken up into three different breeds: the Standard, the Giant, and the Miniature. Known for their distinct (and adorable beards), their name is German for “whiskered snout”, which shouldn’t come as a surprise.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Schnauzers make excellent family dogs because they are sociable, playful, and very attached to their humans. They do have very high spirits though, so it’s important to give them ways to expend energy or you may have a bored, mischievous pup on your hands. We’ve rounded up the most popular Schnauzer names of the year from our enormous Rover.com database of dog names nationwide. Yes, these are real names given by Schnauzer owners, ranked in order of popularity. Did your dog’s name make the list?

Schnauzer Name Trends
It seems that the sprightly ways of this breed have had an impact on the names that are chosen for them by their families. As you can see, there are a plethora of names that touch upon their silly, mischievous spirit, including Scout, Bandit, Lucky, Rocket and Maverick.
We also see a big influx of glamorous, celebrity-inspired names, probably because this breed has such a distinct and dignified look. The most popular ones include Stella, Coco, Oscar, Prince, Bella, and Greta (Garbo, perhaps?).
Schnauzer Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Schnauzer names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite color, artists, musicians, your heritage, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a famous artist’s name like Picasso or a color-themed moniker like Rusty.
Another consideration when choosing your Schnauzer name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Schnauzer names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Ollie, it’s time for dinner!” or “Pepper, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
